It might be cheaper to go with fine grain sand. The disadvantage would be it would not weigh as much as the lead. Sand is used in large ship's propeller shafts to prevent the hollow metal shaft from distorting under pressure.

Don't need no shot. Cast Iron will work instead.

I told my steel guy to check out the price because solid tubes ( all four ) would be a significant increase in weight and would make for a very stable unit. Keep in mind this unit will never be in drill press mode. It will probably not be moved on the casters either. I doubt it will work due to price although still waiting to hear. The lead shot idea from ER Lover is intriguing idea though. I will have to price lead shot. Smaller the diameter shot the better.

So if the tube has a factor of 0 (ID) then the tube must not exist. Hence it is no longer a tube.
