It might be cheaper to go with fine grain sand. The disadvantage would be it would not weigh as much as the lead. Sand is used in large ship's propeller shafts to prevent the hollow metal shaft from distorting under pressure.

Or, just find a Model 10.
Don't need no shot. Cast Iron will work instead.
Oh, I'd LOVE a set of solid waytubes, 8 feet long.

10 ER, stripped down.
Basic 10ER, Parts machine. Will be a semi-dedicated drill-press machine.
10 ER, a "survivor" of the trailer fire, in the back yard, needing restoration. Has a Mk5 headrest. Finally, stripped down.
Numerous parts, for Model 10 stuff. Except for lower saw guard, A and B adapters, I've got it.
Looking for one more, or some 9 inch extension table raisers.

Re: Using SS's as semi-dedicated tools
I told my steel guy to check out the price because solid tubes ( all four ) would be a significant increase in weight and would make for a very stable unit. Keep in mind this unit will never be in drill press mode. It will probably not be moved on the casters either. I doubt it will work due to price although still waiting to hear. The lead shot idea from ER Lover is intriguing idea though. I will have to price lead shot. Smaller the diameter shot the better.

Again we have had talks about adding weight here before, a simple search on lead shot gives you this one to start with:

I was unable to locate some of the links at ssug but I didn't try to hard, not even sure if they still exist but there were discussions there too.

Mathematically, a solid rod is a degenerate form of a tube, having ID=zero.
From Merriam Webster:
Full definition of Degenerate
2: being mathematically simpler (as by having a factor or constant equal to zero) than the typical case <a degenerate hyperbola>

So if the tube has a factor of 0 (ID) then the tube must not exist. Hence it is no longer a tube.
