This is the solution that a seller on eBay ( simon*e ) utilized. If I remember correctly he called it an improved headstock.

I just dealt with a similar issue when disassembling my headstock for restoration and lubrication. In my case the metal corner actually broke off completely and had to be epoxied back on. I can personally vouch for the effectiveness of a simple washer/nut combo behind the housing to hold the bolt in place. It works like a champ!

Since it is an "A" Headstock I would simply use a lock washer and nut on the back side to remount the Speed Control. It requires the motor to be removed but that will be needed to put the Headstock back together anyway. Using Simon's "improvement" you risk damaging the structure around the holes because it requires installing the blind nuts. Remember the Headstock is a soft metal casting.

I had a similar problem occur with my Mark V model 500 yesterday. The third mounting screw (#3 in the photo benmcn posted above) stripped its threads while I was cranking the speed up (on mine, it's the one holding the spring that the crank dial rests againt). The screws are 10-24; I ran a 10-24 nut onto the screw, in the hole, and dabbed a little epoxy on it to hold it in place. If that fix fails, I'll look into those press-fit nuts.
