I just acquired a 1981 mark v 510 from my grandfather. As I'm going over everything and watching videos to learn how everything works, I noticed that the spindle knob doesn't come off like I see in videos. As far as I know, I'm supposed to be able to adjust the spindle knob to set the mounting depth for the different attachments on the quill correct?
Are there any models where the spindle knob was not suppose to come off?
When I loosened the set screw, the spindle knob would rotate slightly on the quill, but it would not slide off. I've since been able to get it to rotate completely around, but i still cannot get it removed. I don't want to force it if it's not supposed to come off.

What videos showed the spindle knob being removed? The spindle knob is not touched in normal operations. What were you trying to achieve?

The link Ed posted gives a lot of information about it. Other than cleaning around/behind it the Spindle Knob does not need to be removed. It does provide a grip to turn the spindle by hand. It can be used as a visual guide for attaching Arbors and Chucks to the Spindle lining up the set screws as the Spindle Knob set screw should be in line with the set screw of attachments. In the picture below note that when properly aligned the Spindle Knob set screw is in line with the reverse tapered flat of the Spindle. The Spindle has a smaller reverse tapered flat for the Spindle Knob's set screw.
Unless it has some "burrs" keeping it from coming off it should easily slip off the Spindle with the set screw removed. If the Spindle Knob's set screw has been locked in a different spot than the flat on the Spindle a burr could have been created by the set screw digging into the Spindle. The Spindle Knob on my Mark V has a cup end set screw and on my Mark 7 a knurled cup end set screw. Both can make a burr on the spindle shaft so getting it on the flat is important. The cup type set screw's ability to dig into the shaft is why it is best to use flat end set screws on attachments. The reverse tapered flat of the Spindle helps keep the Arbors and Chucks "locked" on the Spindle.
The Spindle Knob is not used for setting mounting depths of attachments.

I've seen videos referencing the spindle knob can be used as an attachment adjustment by loosening the set screw and adjusting its position on the spindle. I wasn't talking about removing it for operational use, just for making adjustments. I had seen the thread referenced above and there seemed to be a lot of different opinions as to the knobs purpose.
I really just wanted to know if there was a model where it wasn't supposed to come off or be adjustable. Russ your comment on burrs makes sense. When I had first removed the set screw and tried to adjust my table saw blade, the knob would barely spin and the set screw was not in line with the tapered flat on the spindle. So I'm guessing it was cranked down on and created some burs which are preventing it from moving along the spindle.
I guess I have to try and figure out how to get it off now.

You should be able to remove it pretty easily with a battery terminal/small bearing puller similar to this one,

But I would just use 4 wooden wedges (2 each side) like you can buy to shim a door frame in the rough opening. Assuming you can get the shims behind it. The collar is aluminum, if you keep working it around, back and forth, it will eventually come off, but you are wearing away the aluminum and it may not fit back on as tight.

Interesting but not correct. There is an adjustment on the lower blade guard for aligning the riving knife with the blade.

The adjustment is via this screw:

He loosened the setscrew for the ARBOR and adjusted the arbor. I WOULDN'T do that either.
SS 500(09/1980), DC3300, jointer, bandsaw, belt sander, Strip Sander, drum sanders,molder, dado, biscuit joiner, universal lathe tool rest, Oneway talon chuck, router bits & chucks and a De Walt 735 planer,a #5,#6, block planes. ALL in a 100 square foot shop.
