My guess is that new paint is going to be glossier than 30 or 40 year old paint.

I love that Evapo-Rust .
Yeah, I do too. I bought it originally years ago to restore a rusty motorcycle gas tank. I got the 5-gallon bucket for that job and it just keeps going and going! It's pricey but works great!

Paint Comparisons:

I wanted to post a few pictures of the various paints I considered before deciding to use the Shopsmith touch-up paint (505706-Before 10-01-2001). It seems to me the closest off-the-shelf paint is the Rust-Oleum 2X UltraCover Paint+Primer Charcoal Gray Satin. Next closest seems to me is, as has already been mention on this forum, the Rust-Oleum 2X Ultracover Primer Flat Gray.

The last two images are of the Shopsmith touch-up paint (pre 2001) compared to the original, 42-year old factory paint on the main table angle gauge.
They seem to match better looking with the naked eye as opposed to looking on the images on the computer screen. I don't know. You be the judge...

I'm sure you're right about that. In fact, me and my wife had the same discussion about an hour ago and came to the same conclusion!

I have used the Shopsmith touch-up paint on my gray Shopsmith restorations as mentioned previously in this topic. I agree about the gloss level but find it does blend in especially over time. Some have been simple touch ups while others have been painting complete parts. I have noticed slight variances depending on the metal being painted and even the surface finish. Just my 2 cents.

VonZipper,

Great work on your restoration and I look forward to seeing it finished.

In addition to the difference between computer screens (colorwise), there is the effect of the color temperature of the light illuminating the objects.

I recommend color comparisons ONLY in direct sunlight by direct vision. Not 100% effective but less prone to incorrect comparisons.

Adding up cost of all those test paint cans, I think just painting the whole thing with ANY color thee likes makes more sense. ;)

That's probably true but if you're trying to do an accurate paint job, maybe it matters to you. If not, there are plenty of shades of gray to go with!

Regarding the cost, I had most of those on-hand already from various hobbies and other projects. I've got a large stash of spray paints accumulated from the RC airplane hobby, model rocketry, plastic models and various other projects around the house. In fact, grays and silvers is what I have most of. Anyway, I like experimenting and tinkering so I don't really like to add up the costs of all equipment and supplies these hobbies require: I might have to start scaling back on the hobbies!

I really just posted the pictures of the paint samples so others who might be considering their paint choices other than than the Shopsmith branded stuff. I included those colors because I had seen them mentioned here on the forum on various threads.

I'll take the samples out in the sunlight and take a few pictures to see how much difference the natural light makes.

I took some more photos of the paint samples in direct sunlight as you have suggested.
