Regarding the bandsaw, where is the recommended spot to mount a bracket for a utility light?

The best answer that I could provide would be "hang it where it will provide the light needed and be easy to turn on/off".
I would not attach it to the plastic cover!!

I attached mine to the back side, just below the hub for the upper wheel. It works well. The only thing I did was change out the self-tapping screws that came with the mounting base with a set of machine screws & nuts.

I bought one of these lights a while back. Like Tom, I put a mounting bracket on the bandsaw. However, before doing this I mounted it in any "T" slot available. In fact I still mount it in the saw table, the rip fence, or the bandsaw rip fence when using drill press or strip sander.
In order to mount the light in the "T" tracks, you'll need one of these. http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/itemfind.htm?item=521787&Submit=Find+Item I know it is expensive, but it sure is handy!!!!
You can also buy extra mounting brackets and attach them to any SPT you have. BTW, the mounting bracket comes with a drill bit and self tapping screws. Also, instructions on best places to mount the bracket(s).
