Check out the Thien Cyclone Separator

I read thru most of the threads on dust collection (e.g., Bill Pentz), dust extraction and air filtration alternatives about a year ago, and gravitated toward a shop-vac one-machine-at-a-time solution once I stumbled on Phil Thien's site: http://www.cgallery.com/jpthien/cy.htm His looks at first gla...

Possible source

I'm trying to build some shop storage and I need to put everything on sturdy casters, but the casters at the local hardware store seem pretty expensive. I can buy armloads of 2x4 for a few bucks, but I can't put it on a caster for under $15 per wheel? Anyone have a good source? I would greatly appr...

Looks like it's coming along great, RiotNrrd. Should be solid as a tank when it's done.:D Can't remember ever wishing I'd made a storage/utility unit LESS strong. Sorry for the delay in responding (my employer occasionally wants me to do some work -- can you imagine?). Keep the posts & pix comin...

keakap, Nice pix...helps a bunch. Does anyone know where you can get a Rip-Strate these days? I haven't seen any on ebay or craigslist. Looks like a tried & true design. Is anyone still making them? I did find a similar but different design at Woodworker's Supply: http://woodworker.com/fullpres....

Thanks for the beautifully simple yet superflexible idea Ed! If you didn't want these boxes to be full of sawdust (mine would be often), could make a simple cabinet in which the older style (with indents) boxes are simple drawers with knobs or just top recesses to grab as a drawer pull. If you were ...

My 2-cent diagnosis

Riot Nrrd, Thanks for the sketch. It helped a lot. I was imagining some quite differrent configs. I like your design. It looks to be a very hand table to own/use. Considering each pair of nearby mortise & tenon joints, 8 along each apron rail, we can consider their ability to resist the forces t...

Riot Nrrd,
One of your great sketches would help a lot to get everyone on the same page. Not sure I'm envisioning the same design you're describing. I can't remember how the HD retractable casters retract...they don't have something similar to the Shopsmith 3-way cam do they?

Thanks guys for your comments. Good example of this forum's usefulness -- I knew I wanted a DIY sandflee, but I didn't see how to do it practically until I read reible and nuhobby's posts -- then it was a breeze. It is a really handy jig to use, though a bit bulky to store. Maybe a coffee-table-top ...

Riot Nrrd, Thanks, good food for thought. Ok, so if the extensions were integral with the tabletop, e.g., screwed and glued, then it'd be a lot easier to get that joint to transmit loads and torque without any play, but then they'd stick out a foot or more at 90deg when off the 500, vs being a flat ...

Losing weight -- down to 25 lbs.

RiotNrrd, I've been wrestling with the tabletop weight issue. The design I was considering was two sheets of 1/2" plywood glued together, with the top actually being panels cut from a 1/2" sheet, snugged up against the sides of T-track and miter channels, creating a continuous top surface,...
