Re: Boat Building

Yes, I built a 15' sailboat with my 510, and am currently building a pair of kayaks. I have a blog with construction photos. Google "boatbuilding with a shopsmith" to find it.

DIY lathe duplicator

I came across this while surfing the web today. It's a clever and simple DIY lathe duplicator that the author made and used to build a chess set.

Outfeed tables

Hey Paul! Hope to see you again at Sucia this summer!

I've made some changes to my outfeed table since I wrote that blog post. I got tired of having to adjust the outfeed table every time I raised, lowered or tilted my 510 table. My outfeed table is now very similar to the one Dusty has, and ...

Now I see why the Post Office is going broke. Watch for another bailout. :(

I think I'll carry on recycling my boxes instead of throwing them away and then having the Post Office go broke turning trees into more boxes and paying to deliver them to me. I know it ain't much, but it makes me feel ...

Magazine storage

We recycle empty cereal boxes or laundry soap boxes. My wife cuts them into attractive shapes and covers them with paper but I just leave them uncovered and add a paper label to the front to identify what issues they contain.

I'd go with Teak Oil - the stuff they use on teak decks of wooden boats. It's the perfect finish if you want a water resistant finish that is not slippery. Teak oil is primarily a mixture of marine spar varnish, linseed oil and turpentine, sometimes pine tar, plus driers.

I started a project over the weekend. I'm working with a piece of walnut 3/4 x 3/4 and about a foot long. I need to turn the ends into 1/2" round about 2 full inches or so. When I'm done it would be a square rod thats round on the ends.
I don't have anything for turning but the SS standards, no ...

I had no idea that stop collars could be so useful. Mine were still on the tailstock, unused, ever since I bought my 510. After pondering how brilliant they would be to use on the saw table and extension table, it also dawned on me: on my 510 I can also use them on the rip fence! The tube that my ...
